FOUR Perth Wildcats players put on a show alongside Ashfield Primary School students in a basketball match as part of the Wildcats’ InspiRED program on August 21.

Captain Damian Martin and point guard Masan Bragg, who also played for the Morley-based East Perth Eagles, visited the classrooms twice a week to interact with students from Years 3 to 6 over the past month.

The duo were joined by Jarrod Kenny and Lucas Walker for a special match against student basketballers.

A few students were lucky enough to wear Martin’s jumper and score slam dunks with the captain’s help.

After the game, the students were presented with their first milestone award, for either reaching an attendance goal of 90 per cent, behaviour or academic goals.

Ashfield deputy principal Darius Schwarz, who organised the program, said the InspiRED program had a “big impact” on the students’ attendance and behaviour.

“There is a need for the kids to have positive role models in the school and it is great how the program is in the classroom rather than it being sport-based,” he said.

“They have been doing a variety of group work with the kids sort of helping with reading and writing.

“Obviously attendance is something we always have to work on and it is always nice to have that extra character to get them to school.”

Mr Schwarz said there was three more milestone presentations to go before the program finished with a trip to Wildcats game.
