BASSENDEAN Galaxy Basketball Club is looking to expand from six to 10 teams in the 2019 winter season.

President Boyd Lakay said he and another dad created the club after failing to find a team for their two sons.

“There are a few kids that were on a netball team and are driving across because they want to be with their friends.
“Most of the kids are riding their bikes to training.
“There are some kids that have never played a team sport before but are playing because they are playing with their friends.”
Lakay said the goal for 2019 was to attract more players.
“We are projecting at least four more teams for the winter season,” he said.
“We have an opportunity to go to the Wildcats half-time game as well.”
Players recently received blue jerseys and equipment from club sponsors Hawaiian, as part of the centre management group’s Local Giving program.
He said the club would be able to use Hawaiian Bassendean’s in-centre spaces to promote club activities and meet local young people.
“This will give the club added exposure, and hopefully spark interest from youth in the Bassendean area to join the club,” he said.
“We encourage young people of all ages and abilities to come and have a go.”
