BAYSWATER-based Star-Mites Gym Sports coach Claire McShanag says her gymnasts will benefit from competing against Australia’s best at the recent national championships.

Seven gymnasts placed in the top six of their respected disciplines at the 2017 Australian Gymnastics Championships last month.

WA state team member and Noranda resident Lauren O’Brien (20) finished in fourth on floor and fifth on vault.

Rising star Sophie Prince, who won the junior 14 and under gold on floor, bronze on bars and team along with fifth place in all-apparatus, earned a spot in the national junior team.

Hannah Tarzan claimed silver on bars and a bronze team medal in the international level 10 division.

McShanag said she was proud to see her gymnasts’ hard work reflected in their results.

“As a coach, you just want to watch them do well and achieve their dreams and they absolutely did that,” she said.

“The experience of travelling to nationals brings out the love they have for representing their state and making new friends on the trip.

“The joy they get from watching all the other gymnasts that come to Melbourne from around the country is great too; they find new skills that they want to try.”

McShanag said O’Brien and Megan Faas impressed at nationals.

“Megan Faas who competed at her first Nationals really enjoyed the experience and said that she learnt a lot, coming home with renewed enthusiasm to try new skills,” she said.

“Lauren O’Brien did extremely well, she competed on three of four apparatus during the competition,” she said.

“This is an amazing result seeing as she was competing against well over 60 athletes in her level.”
