Commonwealth Games Day 9 wrap: WA’s Nina Kennedy takes sole Australian athletics medal

WA pole vaulter Nina Kennedy was the only Australian to land an athletics medal in Day 9 of Commonwealth Games action.

Kennedy, of Peppermint Grove, took bronze with a 4.6m effort against Canadian gold medallist Alysha Newman’s games record jump of 4.75m and New Zealander Eliza McCartney’s silver medal leap of 4.7m.

WA teammate Liz Parnov was equal fifth with a 4.4m clearance.

Basketball: Perth Lynx guard Alice Kunek hit six points from nearly 13 minutes of game time in the Opals’ 109-50 trouncing of New Zealand. The heavy favourites play off for the gold medal tonight against England.

Hockey: the Kookaburras held on for a 2-1 win against England in the men’s semi final to setup a gold medal clash against New Zealand tonight. The side features WA players Jake Harvie, Tyler Lovell, Trent Mitton and Aran Zalewski.
