TEN athletes from Gladiator Wrestling Club in Embleton are hoping to become national champions in October.

The athletes, aged between six to 16 years of age, will be competing at the 2019 Youth National Championships held at Brisbane PCYC on October 6.

They are part of a 15-member state team.

Club owner, state and junior national coach Alan Landy said it was exciting to see the athletes grow.

“I just think it is a fabulous opportunity for them to see another state and to represent their state,” he said.

“It is just an accumulation of a lot of work that they’ve put in and the dedication they have to the sport.

“It is a big deal.”

Landy said the club wanted to add to last year’s success where the club had the most national champions out of any club in Australia.

“We are very confident that we will bring back gold medals and enhance our experience,” he said.

He said the club wanted to gain more girls as wrestling was a “low-profile” sport in Australia compared to being the fastest-growing female sport in the United States.
