Golf: Maylands Veterans Club on membership drive

Kristie LimEastern Reporter

MAYLANDS Veterans Golf Club’s seasoned golfers are calling for more members to join the 25-year club, following years of declining numbers.

The club caters for players aged over 55 and runs a nine-hole competition every Thursday at the Maylands Peninsula Golf Club.

Original golfers Frank Prior and Colin Raven along with third-year member Jan Mounyard said the club was not about the golf but the company.

Prior said the club’s membership record was 62 players while this year, the club had only 47 members.

“The older people do not like to come out here in the cold and it has been a cold winter and quite wet,” he said.

“We would probably get eight or nine more in summer.

“The best thing is socialising and getting out of the house.”

Mounyard said new members could join all year round.

“Also, we need more ladies because we have only got about six ladies,” she said.

“It is just nice to get together to play with the men.”

The club plays every Thursday from 7am to 11am.
