A MALAGA-based quartet of state gymnasts returned home from the Australian Championships in Melbourne with a four-medal haul recently.

West Coast Gymnasts’ Kayla Nguyen starred with a gold medal on floor in Level 10, while Selina Warburton, Kayla and Keara Nel won bronze medals in their respective divisions at the championships held from May 21 to June 4 at Hisense Arena.

Senior women’s coach Marie Pudelek said it was a fantastic result for the girls and the club.

“They train for many years and up to 16 hours a week,” she said. “The athletes and coaches love what they do and achievements like this are a great reflection of a great program.

“The club has had recent success at a national level over the last few years, but for the State to work together and win team medals as well as individual awards has been a step up this year.”

Pudelek said the girls were motivated to increase the level of difficulty in their routines and build on their success.

“The girls are now in a skill training and strength building phase of their training and will compete again in the new year,” she said.
