Maylands goalkeeper Aleisha Power brought to tears by first Hockeyroos call-up

Kristie LimEastern Reporter

ALEISHA Power “broke down in tears” when she found out she scored her first Hockeyroo selection.

The 20-year-old was the WA Diamonds and Curtin University Hockey Club’s first choice goalkeeper this year and was named the goalkeeper of the tournament at the 2016 Junior World Cup.

Power, who is part of the Australian development squad, will make her international senior debut in the three-test series against Japan in Adelaide from November 15-18.

The Curtin University nutrition student said she was “overwhelmed” to become a Hockeyroo after playing competitive hockey over the past five years.

“I think as an athlete, it is a relief to finally get your foot in the door,” she said.

“I got experience from Junior World Cup and I hope that I could transfer that over into the senior level. Obviously, it is another step up and even though it is my debut, I am still learning so hopefully I will take things away from it to know where I am supposed to be in a few years.”

Power said training alongside her Hockeyroos idols, including Rachael Lynch, was a “weird” feeling.

“Three or four years ago, I was looking up to her and now I am sharing the net with her; it is crazy,” she said.

Power and her Hockeyroos teammates will fly out to Adelaide on November 13.
