Maylands Tennis Club’s 80th anniversary more than a celebration for longest-standing member

FOR Maylands Tennis Club’s longest-standing member Geoff Farnham, the club’s 80th anniversary represents the lifelong friendships he has made since joining after World War II.

The club opened on Eighth Avenue in 1937 before moving to Maylands Peninsula in 1980.

Mr Farnham (88), who joined in 1948 and is a life member and former club president, said while he stopped playing eight years ago, his family still played at the club.

“When we were at Eighth Avenue, we were in the town (centre) and everyone saw us and these days we are at the fringes, which is very nice,” he said.

“It is the lifelong friendships with various people… we know them very well so there is a social side to tennis.”

President John Hogben, who joined in 1988, said the club was inviting old and current members to celebrate the club’s anniversary on October 8.

Mr Hogben said the State Government’s $50,000 funding for resurfaced hard courts and LED lighting would attract members and juniors in years to come.

The open day event will feature free tennis and afternoon tea from 1.30pm.
