RISING junior gymnast Maddison Potter from Nollamara is hoping to score a top three finish at her second Australian Classic in a bid to earn state selection for nationals next year.
Maddison (10) trains at Star-Mites Gymnastics Club in Bayswater and the National Centre of Excellence (NCE) at HBF Stadium in Floreat.
The St Kieran Catholic Primary School student currently competes in international level 9 and came overall third and first on floor at the state championships.
She has attended four future camps at the Australian Institute of Sport since joining NCE 18 months ago.
Maddison said she hoped to continue her strong form at the Australian Classic held in Geelong in November.
“I train eight times a week… it has been pretty hard because we have been doing a lot,” she said.
“My short term goal is to go to nationals next year.”
Maddison said she enjoyed attending the future camps because she had the chance to meet different gymnasts from around Australia.
Mother Kylinda said her daughter’s long term goal was to represent Australia at the 2024 Olympic Games.
“She had to work really hard to get into the National Centre of Excellence, it was not an easy road for her,” she said.
“She really had to work on shape and her coaches at Star-Mites have been amazing helping her with that.”
