THE decades-long friendship between Noranda Tennis Club and XKTM Tennis Club from Malaysia will be continued at an upcoming inter-club competition.

In 1979, member Frank Kettell took a junior soccer team to Kuala Lumpur in his role as the Junior Soccer Association of WA secretary and became friends with the Malaysian Schools Sports Council head and XKTM Tennis Club member Abdullah Marzuki.

Continuing their friendship, Marzuki wrote a letter to Mr Kettell’s wife and tennis club secretary Marilyn, asking if he could bring his tennis team to Perth in 2013.

Since then, the two clubs have played for the Esprezzo Trophy in Kuala Lumpur, Khoa Baru and Perth.

The clubs will face off again on November 24 in Noranda and November 25 at Maylands Tennis Club.

Mr Kettell, of Morley, said Marzuki had always been a tennis player and kept playing at the age of 86.

Mrs Kettell said the teams were looking to play in Singapore in the next few years.

President Don Butler, of Noranda, said the club had about 70 members, including junior players who competed and received professional coaching.
