Rio Olympics: Hockeyroos overcomes Argentina 1-0

Toyah ShakespeareEastern Reporter

THE Hockeyroos dominated Argentina in their fourth Rio Olympic Games match, culminating in a 1-0 win.

With losses to Great Britain and USA, the win meant the Australian women’s side carried on their winning streak after they trounced India 6-1 earlier in the week.

In the first half, Argentina were handed three green cards.

Hockeyroo Emily Smith scored in the third quarter, the game’s only goal.

Goalkeeper Rachael Lynch, a Royal Perth Hospital nurse, put in an impressive performance including saving a penalty stroke.

Jodie Kenny, who plays for UWA Hockey Club, also put in a dominant performance throughout the match.

Argentina almost equalised in the fourth quarter with a slice that went over the top of the goals.

Curtin University student Kathryn Slattery had another chance to score when she juggled and controlled a midair ball, following up with a tomahawk at the goal.

With 90 seconds to go, Argentina took off its goalkeeper and put on a kicking fullback in an unsuccessful last-ditch attempt to score.

The Hockeyroos play Japan on Sunday.
