WESTS Scarborough had an emphatic 43-0 win over Perth Bayswater in the Rugby WA Premier Grade competition on the weekend and Cottesloe beat Associates in the match of the round.

Cottesloe capped off Ladies Day celebrations with a commanding 40-10 victory of Associates in the ‘Battle of Broome Street’.

The Gulls put in their strongest performance of the season to date running in six tries to one for a comprehensive win over their bitter rivals.

Cottesloe skipper Kieran Stringer said he was proud of his team’s effort from start to finish.

“We’re stoked with that performance today,” he said.

“The first five weeks of the season we have sort of played well in patches but haven’t been able to put it all together for 80-minute until now.

“I think the most pleasing thing was our defence today, our attack has been going ok so far but to hold them to just 10-points was a really good effort from the boys.

“And for us to have a big win like that on ‘Ladies Day’, which is probably the biggest day of the year for our club is just awesome.”

Cottesloe weathered an early storm from Associates to eventually get down the other end and open the scoring through Charl Nieuwenhuis who picked up from the base of the ruck to barge his way over.

The scrumhalf then converted his own effort to give the Gulls an early 7-0 lead.

Ill discipline from Associates handed Cottesloe a chance to extend their lead almost immediately and Nieuwenhuis made no mistake slotting the penalty in blustery conditions from 35-out to extended the lead to 10-points.

Cottesloe lock Damien Carley was yellow carded for repeated infringements and Associates made the most of the extra man with Timothy Broux scooping up a loose ball 40m from the line to charge in under the posts.

Damian Elton made light work of the conversion to close the gap to 10-7.

Cottesloe responded as Nieuwenhuis coolly slotted his second penalty of the afternoon to push the lead out to six points.

Cottesloe continued to control territory and possession and got further reward for their effort when Oli Hoskins barged his way over the line for Cottesloe’s second of the contest.

Nieuwenhuis continued his good form with the boot to have the Gulls leading 20-7.

Associates built some pressure towards halftime but were unable to capitalise as the home side took a 13-point buffer into the break.

Playing into the wind Cottesloe kept the ball in hand and were able to find Ivan Wright in space down the left wing and the young speedster finished with ease to touch down in the corner.

The missed conversion left the score at 25-7.

As they looked to play themselves back into the game Associates opted for a penalty directly in front just 15m from the line and closed the gap to 25-10.

Cottesloe continued the dominate with ball in hand as a strong carry from Alistair Haining got the Gulls on the front foot before they swung the ball out to left to find blindside flanker Dylan Pietrerse who muscled his way over to put the score out to 30-10.

Going on the attack again Cott found a gap in the Associates line and put the ball through the hands before eventually finding Oli Hoskins floating on the right touchline and the big man cruised over for his second and Cottesloe’s fifth of the match.

In the shadows of fulltime Cottesloe compounded the agony of Soaks as Tobias Hoskins drew the Associates defence before offloading for Ivan Wright to go over for his second and finalise the result 40-10.

In other results, Kalamunda beat Joondalup 36-17, UWA had a 25-12 win over Wanneroo and Nedlands defeated Palmyra 32-14.
