Soccer: Ashfield attracts former players back to club in coaching roles

Former club captain Matt Wardle, who helped trigger a State League revival in 2010, will serve as head coach.

Former Ashfield and Inglewood United striker Mladen Kovacevic has signed on as the reserves coach.

Another former player, Mark Humphreys, will work on youth development and assist Wardle during the coming trials across three grades.

“We have some good history as they are all former Ashfield players and they know what players and positions they want, to join Ashfield, and in time, they will be trialling to improve their squads,” Busby said.

“Last year was less successful than the previous two seasons where we came second two years in a row.”

Busby said Wardle was confident the teams would improve under him.

“He has the desire and the confidence, and support to achieve his goals,” he said.

“The appointment of senior coach Matt Wardle is a positive and settling influence and well received by the players, committee and members.

“Matt has been wise to recruit Mladen Kovacevic and Mark Hum-phreys as his assistants.”
