Soccer: Bayswater City primed for first competitive match against Perth SC

BAYSWATER City coach Chris Coyne says his squad are primed to put practice into play in their first competitive match of 2017 against Perth SC on January 22.

Bayswater and Perth will face off in the first round of the 2017 Night Series.

The club won the 2016 night series but missed out on a top-four finish in the regular season, while Perth SC are the reigning NPL champions.

Coyne said the match would pose as a good test for the players, after a tough pre-season.

“Preparation has been very good and it is great that a competitive game is coming up, as the players have been training hard for three months and need the game to see where they are at,” he said.

“The training has been great in terms of quality and tempo and the fact that all the players have gelled so well is a bonus.

“We are always looking forward to playing Perth, as they are our close rivals and the game is traditionally a good spectacle.

“Added to the fact that Perth are the reigning champions, it will be a good litmus test to see whether we have improved as much as we believe we have.”

Coyne said the squad was almost full-strength ahead of the night series.

“We have had the assistance of (physiotherapist) Dave Moala keeping an eye on the players’ workloads and ensuring the players are all at the top of their game,” he said.

“We have added some much-needed pace and quality with the return of old boys Declan Hargreaves and Bor Bor Sam and the fact that we have Jack Allen returning from a knee injury is a massive bonus.

“We are still looking to add one or two but with the quality we had as well as what we have brought in, it should be an exciting year.”

Bayswater City will face Perth SC on Sunday at Litis Stadium at 7.30pm.
