NORTHERN Redbacks Women’s Soccer Club in Balga will be the first WA team to compete in the 2019 Gothia Cup in Sweden.

A squad of 16 juniors and three train-on players will test their skills among the world’s best juniors in Gothenburg from July 14 to 20.

The cup, which started in 1975, attracted about 1700 teams from 80 nations each year.

Coach Neil Bennett said the club was very excited to compete in the cup.

“As the first female team from WA to take part, we think it’s a great honour, and we’re looking forward to not only competing but also acting as ambassadors for female football in WA.

“We’re in the under-16s age group for girls and in the A division so the teams we will be playing against will be very strong.

“We think that by playing against girls from different cultures and backgrounds it will help them grow as footballers and people.”

Bennett said the squad would be doing extra training sessions and friendly matches against older and stronger teams ahead of the cup.

He said the club was looking for more fundraising possibilities, after it gained sponsorship from the Swedish Women’s Educational Association.
