The shy 19-year-old player shone for the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Oval during his first AFL game on Thursday night.

Cameron, a Queensland-born and Newman-raised apprentice mechanic grew up immersed in rugby but despite this, had an amazing season for the Swans.

He told the Eastern Reporter in September that he had found the transition from rugby to Australian Rules an easy one so decided to give the sport a go.

‘Both games are similar in lots of ways,’ he said.

‘It was more understanding game plans and different strategies, so I felt it was pretty easy.

‘When we moved to Newman there was no rugby and because I liked playing sport, I thought I would give AFL a go.

‘I’ve not looked back, it’s a great game.’

In his first game for the Crows, Cameron racked up 13 possessions and kicked a goal, but it was his speed and defensive pressure that impressed the football world.

Swan Districts Football Club operations manager Rick Anderson, who worked closely with Cameron, said it was a great debut for the youngster.

‘We are very proud of Charlie and his ongoing commitment to his football,’ Anderson said. ‘Charlie has worked very hard to achieve his dreams and what a great debut; he played like a seasoned player.’
