Jurgen and Helen Lunsmann brought their GTi Racing’s Ford Capri Perana A2 (replica) home in one piece after several technical difficulties during the gruelling event.

The race had three legs where cars travelled from Kalamunda to Toodyay, Maryville Downs and Bullsbrook, and ended in Malaga on Sunday.

Helen, who served as the navigator, said it was a great rally despite losing the Classic Challenge category.

“We achieved our aim of bringing the car home in one piece with our marriage intact,” she said.

“But we went so close to a podium place it was heartbreaking to not quite make it.”

Driver Jurgen said their car was diagnosed with an intermittent fault on a new fuel regulator installed prior to the event.

By the close of the third stage at Malaga, the crew had clawed back their time margin and thought they were safe going into the final stretch.

But officials ruled out the team’s results because they had failed to get to the end of service time control within the allocated late time the previous night.

“But we never gave up, nor did the crew who worked to the very end to keep us on the road even after the bad news,” Helen said.
