Tennis: Nollamara club juniors picked to play for WA in National Bruce Cup

TWO of Nollamara Tennis Club’s most promising juniors are aiming to help WA score a top three finish at a prestigious under-12s grass-court competition in October.

Kevin Herbert and Cian Ingles (both 11) were selected in a 14-member team for the School Sports Australia 12 and under National Bruce Cup Tennis Championships held in Shepparton, Victoria, October 14-21.

The duo, who are ranked in the top four in WA for the 2005 birth year, will represent the state for the first time.

Kevin, a hard-court specialist, said earning selection was exciting and nerve-wracking.

“This is my ninth year playing tennis,” he said.

“We have got the team events and we have the individual singles, mixed doubles and doubles. I think we can win or get top three.”

Clay court player Cian said while he enjoyed playing singles, he was a good doubles player.

“I can play on any court but I like the clay because of the sliding and making people run,” he said.

Nollamara-based Pro Edge Tennis Academy coach Phil Lamprecht said it was the first time in history that two Nollamara players had been selected to play in the Bruce Cup.

“There are players like Pat Rafter and Rod Laver who started at Bruce Cup, so we might see some of them on TV,” he said.

“I am originally from Germany, I grew up on the clay courts and I come from more of the European philosophy and I have tried to teach the boys that.

“Usually when you talk about Australian (tennis), WA is not the first ones that are mentioned…WA is doing quite well at the moment; it is very nice for us.”

After the Bruce Cup, the duo will turn their attention to the December Showdowns held in Melbourne.
