PERTH basketball fans will have even more reason to get excited from next season, with former Mirrabooka schoolboy Thon Maker taken with pick 10 overall in the NBA draft.

The 216cm prospect was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks, coincidentally the same club who drafted Andrew Bogut with the first pick in 2005.

At the 2016 NBA Draft combine he recorded the highest no-step vertical jump (81.28cm) of any player taller than 211cm in Combine history.

Maker arrived in Perth a refugee, fleeing war-ravaged Sudan with his aunt.

He attended school in Mirrabooka, and he moved to Sydney in 2011 to try his and carve a path towards a professional basketball career under the direction of mentor and American basketball scout Ed Smith.

Maker chose not to attend college in April, and has been rewarded with a contract with the Bucks as a first-round Draft selection.

His younger brother Matur is also a highly touted prospect, and is expected to be drafted next year.
