UNITY, harmony and diversity were the dominant themes at a soccer event in Mirrabooka last week.
Mirrabooka Mosque hosted the match between Common Goal Soccer Academy and Catholic school Trinity College.
Trinity scored the opening goal of the game but the home team equalised before half-time.
Common Goal scored again in the second half and maintained the lead, winning the match 2-1.
Players and supporters enjoyed a barbecue after the game, prepared by the mosque congregation.
The academy is run by Mirrabooka’s Edmund Rice Centre and spokesman Joe Moniodis said it aimed to give young people opportunities to develop through a soccer academy linked to personal and professional development.
“The program also aims to foster positive relationships between people from diverse communities and strengthen police engagement with the community by providing fun and structured sporting activities where anyone is welcome,” he said.
“The main aim is to provide opportunities to young people who may be disengaged or not have the opportunities that others do in a sport and leadership environment, in particular young people from a multicultural background.”
