The former Melbourne and West Coast player signed with his junior club after the Eagles delisted him in September.

Bennell, who played 83 AFL games, said his return to Bassendean Oval had been exciting so far.

“Before I got drafted, I played here and some of the people I know are still out here… it is good to come back and see some familiar faces,” he said.

“It was a pretty simple process. As soon as I got delisted from West Coast, it was a pretty easy answer for me, so why not come back to the place where I started.”

Bennell said his role would be playing at half-back and potentially on the wing.

“I want to just play as many games as I can, guide the younger guys around me and play some good footy for this club,” he said.

“There is a lot of experience come back into the group and hopefully that helps and we can get a few more wins on the board this year.”

The 26-year-old was hopeful that the club would improve on a disappointing 2016 season.

“Training has been good. Everyone gets along well with each other and it is good to have pre-season games to get a feel for how each other plays,” he said.

Former Fremantle and Essendon tagger Ryan Crowley, ex-Hawthorn and West Coast utility Xavier Ellis, retired Carlton midfielder David Ellard, former Collingwood forward Corey Gault and latest recruit Chris Yarran join Bennell in a new-look side.

Swan Districts will play their round 1 match against Perth on March 18.
