Women need help to live AFL dream

The Women’s Exhibition Match at Etihad Stadium, in Melbourne, on Sunday, June 29, will feature Rheanne Lugg (pick 6) picked up by the Western Bulldogs and Kellie Gibson (pick 5), who was picked by Melbourne.

Chelsea Randall (pick 3), Kara Donnellan (pick 5) and Kirby Bentley (pick 9) will also play for Melbourne after being selected in last year’s draft.

Randall said $500 per player and coach was required and would be reinvested back into the team to provide an improved experience which was cost-effective. ‘This year we have decided to stay together to create a better team environment,’ she said.

Donnellan told the Eastern Reporter last month she was looking forward to playing in front of thousands of people.

‘Words can’t explain the feelings and emotions I got last year when my name was read out on draft night. I had no idea what was about to happen and what I was about to be a part of,’ she said.

‘Running out onto the MCG in front of 7500 people, creating history for female football is what dreams are made of.’
