Highway to Hell highlights for those about to rock

Matt ZisFremantle Gazette

IT’S a little frightening but very, very exciting just how well Melville and Fremantle have embraced their inner bogan for Perth Festival’s Highway to Hell.

Outside of the rolling trucks and four official entertainment zones, there’s plenty of fun to be had without the need to unleash any Dirty Deeds in Bon’s Country.

On that, Palmyra police say street drinking is one act of Riff Raff they won’t be tolerating on Sunday – although many of the popular haunts along Canning Highway, including the Raffles, Clancy’s and the Leopold Hotel have expanded drinking areas for the day.

Here’s our inside word to make the most of the day.

First – Get to Tompkins Park to help Perth smash a world record for the largest air guitar ensemble. You don’t even have to be any good, just get there by 3.30pm.

Later – Try walking part of the route alongside one of the rock’n’ roll trucks. Peak hour aside, when else does walking pace seem right on Canning Highway? Grab some Dirty Feeds at the street food pop up outside Hawaiian’s Melville from 3pm.

Night – When the show’s over and you just can’t contain your inner bogan any more, why not belt one out at AccaDacca-OKIE. Head to Ronnie Nights bar in Fremantle at 9pm – cause even more rock and roll really ain’t noise pollution.

For those NOT about to rock…

And if you’re not among the 100,000 expected to head along to enjoy the day, why not get out of home early? It looks like being a fine day with tops in the early 30s, so here’s a few things that are on in Perth anywhere but the local area.

Save your pooch’s eardrums and take them out to Floreat’s Biggest Doggy Date, Grantham Park, Floreat. At 9am it’s an early start, but at least there’s free coffee (for pet owners, not the dogs).

• Go to Adventure World. There’s always queues for the Kraken, unless those queues are actually head-banging along Canning Highway.

• Why not watch the Perth Sharks play Melbourne Glaciers in an interstate ice hockey encounter at Cockburn Ice Arena. Puck drops at 1pm.

Remember:

Roads are closed from 1pm. Key Canning Highway cross streets Reynolds Rd, Riseley St, Stock Rd and Petra St will remain open for local traffic, as will Stirling Highway and Queen Victoria Street traffic bridges.
