Unfolding: New Indian Textiles is a collection of the exquisite artistry produced by modern Indian fashion designers and textile artists that draw on cultural traditions.

Among the textiles exhibited will be beautiful saris, uncut cloth and even streetwear.

Fremantle Arts Centre curator Ric Spencer said Unfolding aimed to look at ways in which traditional skills, motifs and production methods changed over time and how they influenced modern work.

"This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the craftsmanship and beauty of work by contemporary Indian textile designers and artists who draw on India's ancient traditions of handcrafting, while reimagining international trends and employing modern technologies," he said.

"The galleries will be awash with the fine elegance of Indian cloth and the fearless energy of contemporary Indian designers.

"The exhibition has been curated by local artist Maggie Baxter who's had an intimate connection with Indian textile makers for 25 years."

Also kicking off on August 1 is Bahalana: Journey of an Empty Cup, a sculptural installation of Filipino basket weaving techniques from WA artist Fiona Gavino and Chandni Chowk: One Altered Move from local artist Alistair Rowe.

All three exhibitions will be held at the Fremantle Arts Centre from August 1 to September 19.
