The Driver, the brainchild of photographer Alice Mabin, is due to be finished in July and will be the result of close to 18 months of travel across Australia and New Zealand.

Ms Mabin said she had immersed herself in the trucking world as much as she could, working with 110 businesses – including Banjup’s Montague Transport – across the two countries to get a feel for the industry.

“There was a lot of scepticism in the beginning because people saw I was a woman and thought I couldn’t possibly be doing something positive,” she said.

“By getting really involved and going in trucks and learning to drive and hitchhiking around I gained some credibility and people started to listen to me and take me seriously.

The Driver is not about pumping people up, it is about highlighting the work they do, the products they cart and the impact this has on the general public.”

Ms Mabin said she has learnt a lot from her trip so far, and was sure readers would, too, when the book was finally launched.

Work on it began in February last year and followed her previous successful release, The Drover. “I have had to swag it in some pretty interesting places,” she said.

“One day I was on the runway of the Perth Airport offloading some hotshot’s freight, then I was in the distribution centre of Coke, and then I was in a wheatfield with an Aboriginal trucking family.”
