Dr Manning is one of only a handful of army officers in WA who will be supported by the army’s long-term schooling program, which allows defence force members to receive an extensive period of education that is only available through a civilian tertiary institute.

He said he would be able to do an intern year and a residency year at a civilian hospital before being able to use his knowledge and experience to help people here and overseas.

‘I am extremely lucky to have found a vocation that I enjoy as much as medicine and am excited to be a part of the Fremantle team,’ he said.

‘I am hoping to hone my skills in dealing with the medical, surgical and psychiatric problems that people from all walks of life are faced with and really round myself out as a junior doctor before I continue working outside of civilian hospitals.’
