Bryce LuffFremantle Gazette

THE most recent recipient of the Australian Hotels Association (WA) Lifetime Achievement Award has encouraged others to follow his lead.

David Strom entered the industry on a casual basis, keen as a youngster to earn some money while studying vet science.

But the Kensington resident decided to stay in hospitality, going on to work his way up through management at a number of iconic West Australian venues.

Among them were the Herdsman Lake Tavern, El Caballo Resort, the Hurlingham Hotel and the Margaret River Hotel.

In 2007, he opened the Gate Bar and Bistro in Success.

The Brook Bar & Bistro in Ellenbrook and The Ashby Bar & Bistro in Ashby have followed since then, as has his new hospitality resource, Streamline Training.

“I came to WA in the late ‘70s to study and worked in a hotel in a casual capacity,” Mr Strom said.

“It really is a fantastic industry where young people can achieve.

“If you persevere you can get there.”

While his work ethic has been a big part of his success, Mr Strom said his family had played a major role too.

“I wouldn’t have been successful without my family,” he said.

“The industry is demanding and does impact on family time.

“I’m very grateful for their support.”
