SUPERMARKET chain Aldi has opened its store in South Lake.

The German chain, popular in the eastern states before its arrival in WA earlier this year, is at Lakes Shopping Centre on North Lake Road.

The store, which should create 15 jobs, will be open 8.30am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 9pm on Thursdays, 8.30am to 5pm on Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

The company’s newest branch follows a number of other recent openings including Belmont, Kwinana, Joondalup, Harrisdale and Rockingham.

Aldi plans to open 20 WA stores by the end of the year, with 70 planned for the state in the long term.

Lakes Shopping Centre centre manager Nick Magro said the North Lake Road hub was one of the first areas targeted by Aldi about three years ago.

“We are excited that Aldi is joining us at the Lakes Shopping Centre,” he said.

“We are a community-based shopping centre and anything that enhances the amenity of the local area is great to be part of.”

Aldi’s arrival follows a suite of recent refurbishment work on the centre, with a new exterior and food court.

Mr Magro said centre tenants were also investing in their space.

“We are proud that all our tenants have invested in what we are trying to achieve at the Lakes Shopping Centre and no doubt will provide a benefit to the whole community,” he said.

The centre will celebrate its 21st birthday this Saturday between 10am and 3pm.

There will be guest appearances from Captain America, Superman, Spiderman and Iron Man, plus local performers, face painting, a petting zoo, giveaways and prizes.
