Amendments to WA Constitution well received by Cockburn Aboriginal Reference Group

The Bill, introduced by Kimberley MLA Josie Farrer, also removes discriminatory references in other sections of the constitution.

Reference group chair Stephen Loo said it was an historic decision.

“This is a big step forward for Aboriginal people and I’m sure a lot of us are overwhelmed with happiness,” he said.

Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett said the standing ovation Ms Farrer received reflected the Bill’s importance to Aboriginal people and the wider community.

The Bill, which was approved with bipartisan support, will likely be passed by the upper house this month.
