Appeal for wet weather gear

Leah RobertsFremantle Gazette

THE Leeuwin Ocean Adventure is calling for donations to replace old wet weather gear.

Thousands who participate in the Leeuwin voyage and crew are required to wear wet weather jackets and pants and Leeuwin Ocean Adventure chief executive Carol Shannon said replacing the gear was incredibly important.

“When we take young people to sea on the sail training ship Leeuwin, we want them to witness the forces of nature and understand the power of the ocean while building new skills and learning about themselves and their relationships with others,” she said.

“We need them to be focused, warm and dry.

“Just $200 will purchase a waterproof jacket and trousers for a young trainee, and will be used hundreds of times over.”

Ms Shannon said they would buy as many sets as they could raise funds for.

“We’ll replace the worst on board and keep the best,” she said.

“We carry many more sets than the number of trainees to make sure everyone has a set of wet weather gear that fits.”
