A TEAM of Aubin Grove Primary School students are Australasian Pacific champions following an outstanding Tournament of Minds (TOM) showing on the Gold Coast on the weekend.

TOM is a problem solving competition involving primary and secondary school students.

The team of seven bright children held off teams from other Australian states and New Zealand to claim the language literature category for primary school kids.

Students, without the help from teachers, had three hours to solve a complex problem involving the origins of a myth or legend, how the characters from the story were involved in its creation and what symbolic meaning the myth or legend had in society.

Team facilitator Nola Smith said the team also had a separate spontaneous problem to solve with a different set of judges.

“The students handled the pressure really well as they had confidence in their ability to carry out their specific roles in a three hour problem,” she said.

“They had practiced their process as a team in the lead up to the state final and then the Australasian Pacific Final.

“They also supported each other, looking out for anyone having difficulties with completing their role and then giving them a hand.”

Students and their families celebrated with a trip to Sea World.
