IN an announcement sure to please hundreds, the Australia Post outlet based at Cockburn Central is moving back to Gateway shopping centre.

While the relocation only represents a shift of about 450 metres, owner and former councillor Yaz Mubarakai knows how much it will mean to locals.

The post office moved to its current premises on the north side of Beeliar Drive two years ago after its lease at Gateway lapsed.

Mr Mubarakai said customers were unhappy with the move, particularly with having to cross Beeliar Drive and limited parking.

But he said people were excited about the move back to the growing shopping centre, which will happen in March.

“The post office always belongs in the shopping centre, for its accessibility,” he said.

Mr Mubarakai said the decision has been in the works for 18 months. He had been looking at including the post office in the Gateway expansion which opened last year, but there was no room.

“We had to wait longer for the next extension of Coles to happen,” he said.
