Baker, welder, fashionista shine in event

East Fremantle’s Vanessa Martino took home gold in the Retail Baking-Pastry category, Beaconsfield’s Faye Loone won silver in Fashion Technology, while East Fremantle’s Dillon Protich secured a bronze for Welding.

The trio will now have the chance to represent WA during the national competition in September.

Department of Training and Workforce Development director general Ruth Shean said they were among 180 of the State’s best young apprentices to be recognised at the awards.

‘These events aim to challenge young people to achieve their best in their respective trade and skill areas,’ she said.

Four Cockburn residents were also among those recognised as the State’s best young apprentices and trainees.

Coolbellup’s Laura Mackwell claimed gold in the retail baking pastry category, while Guy Farrington, from Beeliar, claimed silver for retail butchery.

Alanna Kemp, from Bibra Lake, claimed silver in the food and beverage category, with South Lake’s Hannah Ronald following with bronze.
