Ms Carter has a long-term aim to see a humanitarian poppy cross placed each Remembrance Day in front of the graves of every veteran to have served the Commonwealth.

The local archaeologist was inspired by the death of her brother Nick, a Captain in the British Army.

She said she wanted his memory, and that of other veterans, to live on forever.

“There is nothing sadder than seeing graves of soldiers left with no sign of remembrance each Anzac and Remembrance Day,” she said.

“I want to ensure that even if there are no family or descendants of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to lay wreaths or poppies, they will not be forgotten.”

It is a big task expected to cost millions.

Ms Carter has established a charity to aid her cause and has liaised with the Office of Australian War Graves to follow through on her plan.

In 2015, 150 crosses were placed at the New Munich Trench British Cemetery in Somme, France. Local schoolchildren volunteered to place and collect the crosses.

The target for Loyal Poppy Crosses in 2016 is to place poppies at the New Munich Trench British Cemetery, Frankfurt Trench British Cemetery and Waggon Road Cemetery in France, and the Perth War Cemetery in Karrakatta.

Returned Service League WA president Peter Aspinall welcomed initiatives, including Ms Carter’s, that commemorate Australian veterans.

“It really is a great way to honour her brother, those that died but also those that survived and others who have struggled since returning from war,” he said.
