The three-year-old german shepherd spent close to two years as a police dog but now trains with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, helping to find people in collapsed buildings.
He also acts as a mascot for the local rangers service.
People have been keen to pat the pooch and chat to Mr Smith ” a former police dog handler with 16 years of experience ” about the role of a ranger.
‘We started with him as an educational tool, visiting schools and community centres and things like that,’ Mr Smith said.
‘He’s a people dog, which makes him ideal for the role.’
