Leah RobertsFremantle Gazette

BICTON and White Gum Valley artists are sharing their love of the ocean in a new exhibition.

Kirsty Watkins and Kelsey Ashe have created the exhibition, titled Buoyant: Sub+Sea+Sky, which will be on display at Kidogo Arthouse.

Mrs Watkins said the exhibition was inspired by the way the ocean speaks to people.

“It’s a place of refuge, renewal and it energises you,” she said.

“We love the outdoors and the beautiful Western Australian coastline, we wanted to capture it and share it.

“I remember when I was breast feeding my first child I was stuck at home not having the ability to pop out to the beach before or after work, my paintings of the ocean were my escape.

“We want people to get that feeling of being in your happy place and have instant access to it.”

The former consultant said it had been a gradual change to becoming an artist full time.

“Coming from a consulting career where you’re telling people how to run their business, I thought ‘heck I should be doing this for myself’,” she said.

“This exhibition is unique because both Kelsey and I are from academic and corporate background who come back to this complete love of art.

“We want this exhibition to be accessible for everyone, the connection with the ocean is for everybody.”
