Builder fined $21,000

A WA builder has been fined almost $21,000 for offences committed during a renovation in Hilton. The Fremantle Magistrates Court convicted Ernest Jackson, trading as Jackson Design and Build and Jackson Carpentry, of registration and contractual offences.

The offences took place during a $53,000 renovation at a Hilton property in November 2012 when he performed work without the proper registration.

It is the second time in two years that Mr Jackson has been convicted of these offences and he has been fined more than $50,000.

Building Commissioner Peter Gow said people needed to familiarise themselves with their rights and responsibilities before hiring a builder.

“When the value of the building work is over $20,000 and the work requires a building permit, the builder must be registered,” he said. Online registration checks can be made at www.commerce.wa.gov.au.
