Many local police officers will be working right through the Christmas and New Year period, giving up the chance to spend the day with loved ones to make sure everybody stays happy and safe.
Fremantle police acting officer-in-charge Nathan Trenberth said it was always hard for the families of police and other emergency services workers, who rarely saw their loved ones over Christmas, but they had an important job to do.
“Christmas is a busy time of the year for the local police; with the warmer weather there can be real challenges in tackling crime so it can take a bit more effort for us to get into the festive spirit,” he said.

READ NOW“Unfortunately there is usually an increase |in domestic violence over Christmas so |we will be spending some time with those families most at risk.
“We’re also asking locals to lock their doors because crooks don’t stop stealing just because it’s Christmas time.
“We often deal with the consequences of poverty and poor mental health in and around Fremantle, so it would be great to see families get into the Christmas spirit and consider supporting some Fremantle charities.”
Acting Snr Sgt Trenberth said while police would be busy keeping the streets safe, officers were always happy to receive a kind word and a ‘Merry Christmas’ from locals.
“We’ll be at the Candlelight Carols at the Fremantle Arts Centre so come and say hello,” he said.
