Christmas Island teens get scholarships to study at University of Notre Dame

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

THEY might have lived on an island 2600km off the coast of WA, but Haziq Mohd Jahis and Jasman Lew both were like most teenagers, hanging out with friends, playing soccer and dreaming of university when they finished high school.

Those dreams have come true this year, with both students experiencing university life in Fremantle after they became recipients of the inaugural Shire of Christmas Island Scholarship, which helped them to begin undergraduate studies in health sciences at the University of Notre Dame.

Former Shire of Christmas Island chief executive and Notre Dame PhD candidate Kelvin Matthews said recipients were chosen based on academic merit, motivation and personal qualities, making Haziq and Jasman worthy recipients.

“Haziq and Jasman are outstanding individuals and their contribution to the Christmas Island District High School and the wider community is exemplary,” he said.

“I am delighted to see that this scholarship will give both Haziq and Jasman the opportunity to access university education at Notre Dame and prepare them well for a career in health, wherever that may take them.”
