LOCATIONS in the City of Fremantle will have dual names as part of the council’s reconciliation plan.
The council ticked off on the Walyalup Reconciliation Action Plan 2019-2022 at its June 26 meeting, with 15 actions and 74 deliverables included.
Among the other action items in the plan are cross-cultural competence training for staff and councillors, encouraging education about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in schools in the City and encouraging event organisers to incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander activities.

Aboriginal Elders Ben Taylor Cuiermara and Mingli Wanjurri McGlade spoke at the meeting and thanked Mayor Brad Pettitt and the City for their work on the plan.
Dr Pettitt talked about how the plan was put together and said the recommendations were exciting and ambitious.
The plan was approved unanimously.
It will be sent to Reconciliation Australia for final endorsement.
Development of the plan began in November 2017 and it included meetings with Aboriginal people and key stakeholders.
The wider community was able to contribute via the My Say portal.
The City previously approved an Aboriginal Engagement Plan in 2015, which aimed to assisting its relations with the Aboriginal community.
