City to make call on beach music events

Aaron CorlettFremantle Gazette

HIGH-PROFILE music events could be coming to South Beach next summer after two promoters applied for permission to use the scenic location.

Promoters for Sets on the Beach and For The Love have requested use of the area’s grassed site and adjacent beach frontage for events in February or March 2020.

Sets on the Beach has previously taken place at Port Beach and the For The Love promoter had initially sought to host it at the same location, but coastal erosion meant this could not occur.

Winterworld fun returns

Offworld Productions’ proposal includes holding Sets on the Beach on a Saturday and a Sundown Sessions event on a Sunday.

According to a City of Fremantle report, the concerts have the capability of attracting more than 5000 people each and council officers have noted consultation would need to occur with residents and business owners.

At the council’s Finance, Policy, Operations and Legislation Committee meeting on July 10, councillors voted that the two events be held at least three weeks apart and to further investigate how to maximise community benefits and minimise impacts.

The original motion was just to allow one music event to take place, but an amended motion was moved to approve two, subject to the full council’s decision.

The council will consider the events at its meeting on July 24.
