Club rallies to support cricketer

Jalen Smith (15) was diagnosed with leukaemia in December after only just overcoming a previous battle with cancer in July.

The Cockburn Cricket Club (CCC) player faces 12 months of treatment but the community will ensure his family will not face the challenge alone.

A fundraiser will be held this Sunday, with cricket matches, food, auctions and a quiz night taking place at Davilak Reserve.

Money raised will go to the Smith family.

Event organiser Wayne Fernie said CCC, together with the local football and basketball community, was right behind supporting the family.

“The response to this has been huge,” he said. “Everyone has banded together.”

Jason Smith, Jalen’s dad, said the family remained positive despite having to spend Christmas and New Year in hospital.

“We’re totally shocked at the response,” he said. “It’s incredible that Jalen’s story has touched so many people.”

Among the items up for grabs are cricket bats signed by Michael Hussey and Perth Scorchers, and a day trip to Rottnest Island.
