The underpass, currently used by pedestrians and cyclists, will allow buses to move passengers to and from the shopping centre without having to enter a busy North Lake Road, often backed up at the traffic lights.

City engineer John McDonald said the upgrade would be a welcome addition to the development of Cockburn Central.

‘The upgrade to the underpass will complement the rest of the vision,’ he said.

‘It will allow for a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly access area to complement the vibrant town centre across the street.

‘Around 40,000 vehicles a day access Beeliar Drive currently so any relief from buses to the busy intersection will help ease congestion and improve public transport.’
