Jandakot residents Ian and Pieter Bezuidenhout have called on others to donate blood this |Christmas.

The Fremantle Blood Donor Centre needs 400 donors this Christmas and New Year to secure blood stocks for cancer patients over the festive season.

To prevent a major drop-off in platelets ” the shortest-lived blood product and critical in the treatment of cancer patients ” the blood service is running a blood blitz to encourage more people to donate at a time when resources are low.

Donating regularly, Pieter Bezuidenhout said he’d continue until scientists create an alternative product.

‘It’s only a little time out of your day but if everybody makes a little bit of an effort it would be a lot easier for everybody else,’ he said.

‘Just looking at the people who require it, especially the little kids, you realise it’s a big effort.’

His son Ian echoed that message.

‘Once it becomes a pattern, it stings only a little bit, plus the nurses are very friendly so it’s not uncomfortable at all.’
