Filmmaker excited by challenges ahead

The Coolbellup resident joined about 500 filmmakers, celebrities and industry representatives celebrating the 26th annual WA Screen Awards at the Heath Ledger Theatre on Monday, July 14.

Fortescue was pipped at the post for the Young Filmmaker of the Year award by writer and director Daniel Monks.

Fortescue said he was disappointed, but there were plenty of talented people in the industry in WA.

‘Talk to any of the winners and I’m sure they’ll all be able to tell you stories about the near-misses and close calls that lead to their current success,’ he said.

‘I was lucky enough to sit next to Daniel Monks for most of the night and he’s a great guy, so I wish him all the best.

‘It’s time for me now to get back to the grindstone because there’s always next year.’

Fortescue said he would now turn his attention to finishing the locally filmed Broken Contract and look forward to new projects.

‘When you live from job to job, the future is never very certain for a filmmaker, which is one of the most exciting aspects,’ he said.

‘Currently I’m waiting for news on a couple of different projects, so I could be extremely busy ” or not.

‘In a month or so, things should be more certain.’
