Finding funds for freeway widening

Bryce Luff, Fremantle GazetteFremantle Gazette

Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had approved for Federal funding to widen the Kwinana Freeway between Roe Highway and Armadale Road to three lanes. The package also includes upgrades to on and off-ramps.

‘Tenders will be called in coming months, with the projects to be funded using savings achieved on earlier projects,’ he said.

Mr Albanese didn’t offer a figure for the project, but Jandakot MLA Joe Francis placed the total cost at about $62 million.

Mr Francis said half of that funding would come from the State Government. He was confident he could convince Treasurer Troy Buswell to part with the money.

‘The $31 million federal contribution comes from previous grants for WA roads that the State has delivered on time and under budget,’ Mr Francis said.

‘For it to be used to further widen the Kwinana Freeway south to Armadale Road will require the State Government to match the contribution. I will be doing everything I can to convince the Treasurer to make this commitment.
