Fremantle: crane at E Shed Markets to be lowered

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

THE iconic old crane outside the E Shed Markets will be dismantled amid growing safety concerns.

A Fremantle Port spokesperson said they were planning to dismantle and remove the 93-year-old crane, which had called the E Shed home since 1996.

“The crane is in a deteriorated condition and engineering inspections have shown it to be presenting significant safety issues,” she said.

“The WA Planning Commission has given Fremantle Ports approval for the removal of the E Shed crane subject to conditions, including preparation of a photographic record of the deconstruction process to inform future conservation works on remaining Victoria Quay cranes.
