IT is not hard to imagine people dancing the night away in packed Fremantle venues during the Jazz Age of the 1920s and ’30s.
While hip hop and street might be the style of choice today, that old-school atmosphere has returned to The National Hotel as swing dancing classes take over the venue every Tuesday night.
Run by Swing It, director Shane McCarthy said the classes were open to everyone and were a fun and easy way to forget about the stresses of life.

READ NOW“Dancing is expression and there’s no better expression than swing dancing, it’s 100 per cent positive, energetic and crazy and you can’t do it without laughing and feeling great,” he said.
“These days it’s hard to find ways to get away from the rush and pressure of modern life but swing dancing has it in spades.
“There’s no other place in Perth that could so obviously go hand-in-hand with the crazy, positive energy of swing dancing than Freo.
“Swing is about having fun and letting go and Freo knows just how to do that.”
Mr McCarthy said classes were available for all abilities, from absolute beginners to those who are more experienced.
