Fremantle: Defence Housing Australia development underway in east end

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

DEFENCE Housing Australia’s (DHA) latest Fremantle development got underway last week, expecting to bring hundreds of new residents to the east end.

Liv Apartments, a new mixed-use residential development on a former Queen Victoria Street car yard, will bring 166 new apartments and 1300sq m of commercial space to Fremantle’s east end.

With work on the site beginning last week, DHA announced property developers Georgiou had been chosen as the preferred construction tender, a contract worth approximately $61 million.

It is the second project for DHA in Fremantle, with the redevelopment of the Gunners Cottages completed earlier this year.

DHA managing director Jan Mason said it made sense to provide housing for Australian defence personnel in an area close to places of work such as the Irwin Barracks and Campbell Barracks.

“We also know that many of our members want to be in locations that are close to inner city amenities; Fremantle therefore is right for us on many levels,” she said.

“The announcement of Georgiou as our construction partner for Liv Apartments is a significant milestone in our efforts to bring this part of Fremantle to life.”
